The Tables Africa’s Youth Will Set

In just 25 years, Africa will be home to the largest youth population in the world. That reality brings not only demographic power but also a rare opportunity to reimagine how we feed ourselves, care for the planet, and lead with values that stand the test of time.

For me, the African kitchen has always been more than a place to prepare meals. It’s a school of leadership. It teaches us that values guide decisions, that scarcity can inspire creativity, and that the act of sharing sustains community far beyond the moment.

When I first returned to Ghana, I made choices that raised eyebrows. I declined lucrative buffet requests because I believe eating in community should not mean lining up in a queue. I took rice off my menus until I could source it from women farmers growing indigenous highland varieties. These were not easy decisions in a competitive market, but they were the right ones—and they built trust with the people I serve.

The next generation of African leaders—whether in food, tech, policy, or business—faces the same challenge: how to innovate without abandoning what makes us unique. It’s not enough to have ideas; you need to understand the systems you’re working within. In my world, that meant mastering classical cooking techniques so I could speak the “language” of any kitchen and still season it my way. For others, it might mean mastering the tools, policies, and markets that will allow your vision to take root and scale.

Africa’s youth are already showing the way. They’re blending technology and tradition, elevating indigenous ingredients from “exotic” to essential, and building enterprises that create value at origin. This is more than cultural pride—it’s smart, sustainable economics.

So, to those setting the tables of tomorrow: do it with confidence. Serve your ideas with generosity. Let the wisdom of your ancestors flavor your innovations. And remember—your work is not just about feeding today. It’s about shaping the feast for generations to come.
